BREAKING: #RAN activists rebrand Bank of America Stadium

Rainforest Action Network

RAN activists descended on Bank of America

Stadium in Charlotte, NC and unfurleda giant banner over the side of the stadium with a new, more appropriate company moniker: “Bank of Coal.”

Join these activists in speaking truth to power. Sign and share this petition calling on Bank of America to stop funding dirty coal now.

This bold action comes just days before Bank of America’s annual shareholder meeting here in Charlotte. This morning, we sent a crystal clear message to BoA executives, board members, and shareholders who will be gathering there on May 9:Bank of America will be named and shamed for its impact on our climate and the health of our communities until it stops funding the dirty coal industry.

RAN and allies are organizing thousands of people to rally at BoA’s shareholder meeting. We need Bank of America to know that for every activist showing up for direct action in Charlotte, there are hundreds more across the country demanding that the bank change its outdated, destructive ways. That message begins with you.

Please sign and share this petition calling on Bank of America to become a leader of financing clean, renewable energy solutions and leave coal right where it belongs—in the ground.

Have you made your climate dot yet? #350.org

Dear friends,

5/5 is almost here!

This Saturday, at events around the world, people will Connect the Dots between extreme weather and climate change. It's going to be an amazing day -- and the theme that will tie it all together is…the dots!

Here's the deal: at each event, people will take a photo of their "climate dot" which they'll make out of fabric or cardboard or anything else. Each of these dots will represent how climate change is already hitting home in our local communities. Some of them will have a climate message on them, some of them will have a symbol of local extreme weather, and some will just be a big, plain dot.

We put together a full tip-sheet on how to make a great photo here, and here's an example of a great, simple climate dot photo that just came in from our friends in Vermont recently devastated by the flooding of the Mad River:

Climate Dot from Mad River Vermont

As soon as the local events are finished, we're asking everyone around the world to upload their photos to us -- our 350 team will make a global photo mosaic that connects all those dots. To make sure our message reaches "outside of the choir", we'll deliver those photos to global media and decision-makers -- the people who most urgently need to connect the dots.

Here in New York, our 350 crew had a lot of fun making our climate dot (you can see photos here) -- and we learned a lot while we were doing it. Here are the basic steps to make your dot:

1. Cut out a dot. We used a parachute for our dot, so we didn’t have to cut it; but most fabric stores will help cut out the dot. Or cut a giant dot from a thrift-store bed sheet, a big piece of cardboard, or anything else that works for you. Or, if you don't feel like cutting something out, just draw a big dot on a sign.

2. Put a message on it. Will your dot be in a place that’s self explanatory? Will the climate impact be clear? If not, write the name of the city and your climate message on the dot. For example, we wrote “NYC Underwater” on our dot. You can also just put one of the "climate impact symbols" on your climate dot -- you can download and print those symbols right here.

3. Make sure you have a team set up to hold it up. Sometimes an overhead angle on your dot makes a dramatic visual. Wondering about having a lot of people in the shot? Great if you have them, but no worries if you don’t.

4. Scout your location and take a photo. Take some photos and figure out where the dot will look best. Ideally, the dot will be front and center, and the background will show how climate change is impacting your community.

5. Send it in! Send your single best photo to photos@350.org. Put the location as the email subject line, and include the story behind the photo in the body of the email. You can find full photo upload-instructions here.

Things are getting a bit hectic as we gear up for 5/5, and it's all starting to come together. I truly can't wait to see your climate dots this weekend -- to see, once again, what this movement is capable of when we act together.

Onwards,

May for the 350.org team

P.S. Most of all, we need you out in your community on the 5th, but the action isn't all offline -- we also need a crew of online activists who can spread the word and Connect the Dots using social media. We're gathering a #ConnectTheDots Social Media Team to share key photos, facts and videos from our day of action. Click here to join the team: www.350.org/ctd-team

350.org is building a global movement to solve the climate crisis. Connect with us on Facebook and Twitter, and sign up for email alerts. You can help power our work by getting involved locally and donating here.

C2C: Drought, Food and Climate: Weds Seminar

To view this message in your browser, click here
C2C/National Climate Seminar

Dear friends and colleagues,

Drought expands through USA

That was Friday’s headline in USA Today, and I can tell you that the ground here in New York’s Hudson Valley is dry as a bone, with creek’s running at late summer levels.

Wednesday, April 18th at noon eastern, The National Climate Seminar welcomes Columbia’s Cynthia Rosenzweig for a discussion of climate, drought and agriculture: the recent Texas and Oklahoma droughts have cost those states billions. Are megadroughts likely for the western US generally? Can farmers adapt quickly enough? What is the global food outlook under different climate scenarios?

Call-in number: 1-712-432-3100; Conference Code: 253385. Send advance questions for Cynthia to climate@bard.edu.

The final National Climate Seminar, in two weeks, will feature Jihan Gearon from the Black Mesa Coalition on their frontline climate work.

Connecting drought and extreme weather across the planet is the object of 350.org’s 5/5/12 Climate Impacts Day—terrific video here.

I will be doing my part, channeling Santa at Bard that Friday, 5/4/12. Santa is facing his own climate impacts, and is a wonderful, non-threatening spokesperson for the issue. Everyone will want to know why Santa has come around in May!

Let us know if you want to host your own Project Santa 5.4.12 in your campus or in your community.

Finally, we are also pleased to announce two new $20,000 scholarships for Bard CEP’s MS programs—one for domestic students and another for international. Thank you for passing this note along to interested students and alums.

Thanks for the work you are doing—

Eban

Film Synopsis
When Juliette West set out on a quest to educate herself about the plight of elephants, she got far more than she bargained for. Inspired to make a change, her anger is driven by love. How I Became an Elephant follows this innocent 14-year-old girl from suburban California on her quest to save the world's largest land mammals—a quest that takes her halfway around the globe and face to face with the giants she aims to save. There, Juliette meets Asia's famous "Elephant Lady," Lek Chailert, and together these women from opposite ends of the Earth and cultural spectrum converge on common ground: saving endangered elephants.
